Halloween 2002

It was so cold I was worried about taking the girls out alone--I was sure
they would get tired and cold at the exact opposite end of the block and
both want to be carried home. Christine was kind enough to come over and
trick or treat with us, while Bill stayed home and manned the candy bowl.

Emily was so excited to be trick-or-treating that she didn't notice the cold. She RAN
ahead to each house and called back to us to report whether or not the house
had its lights on! She was cold but didn't want to stop!

Sarah's eyes kept tearing up from the cold, but whenever I asked her
if she was doing all right, she said, "Dess! Dess!" very emphatically.
It only took Sarah a few houses to figure out what was going on. Since her mittens
didn't have fingers, Christine or I would carry her bag, and set Sarah down on the
stoop. Sarah would hold out her arm and mittened hand imperiously and we would
slide the handle of the bag over her sleeve. She would say, variously, "Me, too!"
or "Ah-ween Dandy!" but not "Trick or treat!"
