Emily and I played my new GameBoy video game this afternoon while Sarah napped. Em surprised me (I don't know why) with how well she manipulated the buttons (using her right and left hands in combination), interpreted game conventions (moving from screen to screen, for example), and remembered what to do in different areas of the gameworld. 9/2

Em has started to ask, "What's that word?" or "What does that mean?" when listening to her stories. Up to now, she has just kind of soaked everything in. Now she needs specifics! 9/4

First day of half-day preschool! Emily says she likes it and her teachers said she was a good helper to all the new kids. 9/4

Em the Mathematician: In the car today, Emily decided to make a chart. She drew a big shape, divided it into four sections, came up with a "research question" ("Who likes smiles?"), and drew our initials under the appropriate heading. She counts up the answers and announces, "The 'nos' are outvoted and the 'yesses' are invoted." 9/5

After we tucked her in, Em got out of bed crying tonight because she said she missed Gracie so much. That's the second time in the last ten days she's cried for her. I keep asking if she wants to write Grace a letter, but Emily says, "That won't make me feel better." Poor Em! 9/7

We watched "The Lady and the Tramp" for quiet time today and Emily spent the whole movie telling me, "If _I_ was in this movie, I would help the dogs/warn the lady/scare away the rats...." 9/8

Emily moves up a class in Sunday school! After a couple of years with Miss Ardie and Miss Pat's preschool group, Emily is now with Miss Michelle in the Pre-K and K class of 4 and 5 year olds. 9/8

Dad makes a tent for Emily in the family room, with her chairs and a comforter. Emily says, "I'm just going to get something from the kitchen!" She comes back with her little broom, which she uses inside her tent to prop up the roof! 9/10

Emily says, "I know we're getting close to school when I see the crooked roof!" (The dorms on High St. a couple blocks from school have a zigzag roofline.) 9/11

Emily says, "[If I'm Pooh for Halloween], you have to make my thumb stick out from my fingers." 9/11

To celebrate Daddy's first week of classes, we went to meet him at his new office and had lunch together. 9/12

Emily's school report says, "Special Friends of the Week: Everyone! Emily spends time with all the other kids throughout the day!" and "It's great to have Emily back in the Purple Coyote classroom!" 9/13

Em the Mathematician, Part Two: This week Em and I put colored stickers on the spines of her videos, so she could tell without asking which videos were "short," "medium," or "long" (30, 60 or 60-plus minutes). While we worked on this, Emily solved two problems. When I told her one of the videos was in between a "short" and a "medium," she thought for a minute, then said, "I know!" She pulled out both a short and a medium color sticker and put them both on the edge. Then we made a chart, so Emily could remember which color went with which length. She knows about "halves," so I showed her that a medium video was equal to two short ones. Then I said a long one was equal to 3 short ones, and asked if there was another way we could add videos to make a long one. She pointed right away to the short and the medium colors, which, as Bill pointed out, is basically algebra: if long = 3x.... Cool! 9/15

Favorite Book of the Week: "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," by Judi Barrett. A town that receives all its food from the sky has to move to a new location when the weather gets out of control. 9/20

Emily has been complaining about not wanting to go to school...I think without all the familiar faces it's not as much fun as it used to be for her. Today when I asked her about it, she said she didn't want to go because "the toys in my room are funner." 9/27
