We drive to Crested Butte for the 4th of July! Emily and Avery have a GREAT time together being silly, giggly, and listening to books. Em sleeps in Avery's room like a sleepover! Em loves the parade, especially the candy that the people throw from the floats, and is impressed when the parade goes by again, backwards. We go wade in a creek to cool off later on, and Emily slips and falls. Fortunately, I have dry pants in the van--but the only shirt I can find is a romper for Sarah. We pull it on over Emily's head anyway and it fits! We just tucked the tails and snaps into Em's jeans...how funny. We take a walk around Shelley's "block" with Sarah, Mommy, Avery, Shelley, and the dogs. Em and Avery like running way ahead with the dogs and then waiting for the rest of us to catch up. We also take a little walk to a river where Emily and Avery wear their swimsuits and rubber boots to wade and play. Emily's favorite thing is when Shelley lifts Emily upside down to empty the water out of her boots! Emily talks about her "friend Alex" on the hike, and Shelley asks me, "Is Alex an imaginary friend?" Emily hears her and answers her herself: "Yeah, Alex is imaginary." I wonder for a second if Emily knows what she's talking about, but then Em says immediately, "She's only in my head." Okay, Em! 7/3-8

Vacation Bible School this week features the puppet Mallory Mouse, who appears at the closing group time when the kids sing her theme song. We sing a LOT of Mallory Mouse's song at home this week! Emily requests it almost every night as her bedtime song. 7/8-12

At the dentists we get a great report on Emily's teeth. She has no cavities, and plenty of space for her permanent teeth. Her front teeth (which she banged long ago on Trent's stairs) are definitely graying from the damage they sustained, but are in no danger of being a problem or of falling out until they should in a few years! Em shows good behavior for the hygenist and chooses a soccer ring as a prize. 7/10

Em says, dismissively, "There's a person inside Barney."

Emily's friend Dylan from Purple Coyotes has his 5th birthday party at a gymnastics studio! Emily loves the big obstacle course they have set up around all the equipment. She gets to climb over hurdles, balance on the balance beam, swing on a rope, and jump on trampolines. 7/13

We head to the church picnic this afternoon. It is at a new, fun park this year with a great playground but it is so hot it is hard to have a good time. Em does get some ice cream, but we poop out pretty early on and head home. 7/14

Emily puts on her high-heeled dress-up shoes, then takes them off and puts them on backwards. She says, "Now they're high toe shoes!" 7/16

We have dinner with our friends Jeff and Sophie and their kids Arthur, 3, and baby Eva. They have invited us to our house and since it is their day to water, they told Emily to bring her swimsuit and they will turn on the sprinklers! Arthur and Emily enjoy throwing a ball close to the sprinklers and running in to get it, then resting on their towels to dry off. Later they use the towels to make a hide out under some of the lawn furniture. 7/16

As we leave for school, Daddy comes out, too, and goes to the garage. I say, "Daddy's getting out the lawnmower." Emily says, "Yeah--'cause he's going to lawn the grass."

Sage comes over for one last playdate before he moves to Utah. Em and Sage have such a true affection and respect for one another that it is a joy to listen to them cooperate and compromise while they HAVE FUN. They love to just be together and it shows. We will miss Sage a LOT! 7/20

Emily announces this week that she wants to be a vet when she grows up. 7/21

We go visit the Queens and play in their backyard. Emily loves the big swing (on long ropes from a tall tree) and has a great time getting pushed in a big spinning circle by Madelyn. 7/23

Christine has been looking forward to taking the girls to the Build-a-Bear shop at the Cherry Creek Mall ever since Em's birthday! At last we find the time to go and both Em and Sarah get to choose, stuff, name, and put ribbons on their very own bears. 7/23

Em says, "I'm an 'I' and you're a 'you.'" 7/25

Today Emily does backbends at gymnastics, bending backwards over a big cylindrical mat while teacher Kevin catches her. 7/25

Liz comes over for dinner. 7/26

Emily's favorite words this month: 'really' and 'actually.'

Emily's most-requested bedtime song continues to be "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

Emily pedals her trike all the way around the block, with just a little help going uphill. 7/29

The Deppers and the Duffs go to the Belleview park which has a train, a playground, and a petting zoo! The girls requested "matching sister" outfits. It is VERY hot so the misters in the petting zoo are a big hit! 7/30
