After about a month of adjustment to her new school schedule, Emily is finally looking forward to going to school again. 10/2

This morning, Emily says, "I thought that you were tired, Mom, that's why I wanted to help you make French toast." 10/3

Emily sees a whole bunch of raspberries on one cane and says, "Holy Moley Macaroni!" 10/5

We went to two parties today! First we stopped at the Duffs' to say happy housewarming and happy birthday to Nigel. Emily and Nigel ran around the house "fixing" things with the tools in his tool set. Then we went to the DMS grad student potluck at the Rutenbecks' house. As usual, Emily spent the whole time with Anna and Mary. They ate a billion candy corns and played a "Harry Potter" game on Anna's computer--Emily got to push the "spell" button. After listening to fifteen minutes of knock-knock jokes on the way home, Daddy teaches Emily how to play "20 Questions." Emily and I did NOT guess that Daddy was thinking about a hockey puck! At ten o'clock Emily was still awake when I peeked in on her. I asked her if she was still excited from all the parties today, and she said, "No, I think it's all the candy!" 10/6

As we were getting ready to leave school, Miss Kelly told me, "I told Emily today how glad I was that she never whined or cried in our classroom, and she said, 'Well, sometimes I whine and cry at home!'" 10/9

We go to school even though it's Thursday to join the Purple Coyotes at a "pumpkin patch." Some of the parents walked over to the "Big Hill"--a section of lawn near the Ritchie Rec Center where the kids often walk for snacktime--and set out some pumpkins on the grass. The kids came over and we ate snacks, chose pumpkins, and rolled them down the hill! The college kids walking by had a great time watching all these pumpkins come bouncing down toward them, followed by preschoolers yelling and running as fast as they could after them. Both Emily and Sarah fell asleep on the way home! 10/10

Em helps out Mom in the kitchen: "Here's the oven mitten!" 10/10

Emily attends Erika and Lukas' 5th birthday party. When their mom asked them who they'd like to invite from the old Purple Coyote class, they said, "Emily D! Emily D!" Their mom asked Jeanine for Emily D's information, and Jeanine said there wasn't an "Emily D" anymore, just an Emily! They had their party at a gym and Emily dove in the ball pit, balanced on the railings on top of the balance beam, bounced on the trampolines, and listened to the teachers' instructions (not all the kids did!). 10/12

Emily has been working on the little letters of the alphabet. She'll say, "Do you want to see my little 'D?'" When I asked her if she was doing little letters at school, she said no, just by herself! 10/14

Emily has been talking about going to the movies and so today we had a "movie quiet time." After Sarah was asleep for her nap, we popped a little popcorn, then watched a long video with the lights out! 10/15

We made plans to meet Claire, a new friend of Em's from school, and her mom Ashley at Observatory Park today. It was chilly but the girls had a good time climbing and swinging anyway! They said goodbye, went home for lunch, then said hello again when we got to school! 10/16

Emily starts another round of gymnastics at the Wash Park Rec Center with Mr. Kevin. She is getting to be a good balancer on the balance beam, is working on backward rolls, and loves doing skin-the-cats on the bar. She's not sure about trying cartwheels yet, though! 10/17

Todd invited us to his costume birthday party--everyone had to come dressed as him! Emily wore a hockey jersey and jester hat that Todd had given her. I made orange embroidery-floss beaded goatees for all of us. Em liked running around in the little backyard in the dark. Bill drank Guinness, but the girls had chocolate-chip cookies instead. 10/19

Bill bought Emily a Nintendo game a few weeks ago called Animal Crossing, which we are all enjoying a lot. It's basically a village that you can explore, with other residents you can talk to, do favors for, and write letters to. It has room for 4 players, so Bill, Emily and I are all playing! We can send letters to each other at the post office, and the next time we play the game, the letters are in the mailboxes at our houses. When you first come to town, you buy a house and get a mortgage (!?) but the fun part is you can dig up treasures with your shovel, catch bugs in your net, pick fruit from the trees, and sell them all to the store keeper to make money. You can even rearrange the furniture in your house and design a pattern for your clothes at the tailor's! Em likes to walk around town looking for shells on the beach and for things to dig up. 10/23

Emily has a bad dream--she says all her new friends from school were at our house and a big spider bit them on their bottoms! 10/24

Em whistles! 10/25

Emily's school report today said, "Emily is really starting to develop friendships with the other girls in the class--that's great to see. She always models excellent behavior for the other kids...thanks Emily!" 10/25

Em has a great time despite the cold temperatures for Halloween. She made an adorable bunny and hopped for anyone who asked! Click here for more Halloween details! 10/31
