Amanda and Erin have a joint birthday party and both Emily and Sarah are invited! They get to ride a real pony up and down the alley! It has been cold and snowy so it was a real relief that the pony could still come. 5/1

It's Field Day at UPark! Mommy's at work, but Daddy squeezes time out to run over to school in time to see Emily...do nothing! She had just finished her last event. Oh, well! She gathered lots of ribbons, but her favorite thing had to do with stacking cups in pyramid patterns. 5/4

Emily helps Sarah and Daddy make a photo album for Mom for Mother's Day. Then we went for a drive up in the mountains, walked by a creek, and bought LOTS of books at a bookstore! It was Em's idea to go to the bookstore, and Mom's idea to go on Mother's Day! A perfect day! 5/8

Daddy goes on the field trip with 1st grade to the Butterfly Pavilion! He watches as Em holds Rosie the Tarantula! 5/9

We all go watch Em in the 1st grade play, "How the Elephant Sees It." Emily is one of the mice and has been practicing her lines for weeks. She does great! She even has the last line in the play, and makes everyone in the audience laugh. 5/10

Em is really enjoying a book I brought home called G is for Googol. Of course it's about math. She has been asking to read about Fibonacci numbers every night. In trying to figure out the next number in the sequence after 144, Em says, "Wait! I know! It's 288!" I had to tell her that although she had successfully doubled a three digit number in her head, that 288 wasn't the right answer. When we did figure out the correct number, 233, Em then added 144 and 233 in her head to keep the sequence going. 5/05

Em makes up her own riddle: "What's round as a cookie, and busy as a bee? What on earth can it be?" A watch! 5/12

On the way to church today Emily decides we are flying through space. She wants me to say when we have passed each planet in turn. Suddenly she says, "There's a sign, Sarah! It says, 'Caution! Next black hole in 12 light years!" 5/15

"I dreamt I went to Monkey Bizness and I jumped so high I touched the ceiling and my ponies [ponytails] fell out!" 5/16

I took a few hours off today since Fisher had a planning day, so I could watch Sarah while Bill taught a class. It worked out very well, since it meant I was free to pick Em up early from her afterschool program and take her to Mrs. Cameron's retirement party in the gym! Mrs. Cameron was Emily's beloved kindergarted teacher and is retiring after 25 years of 5 year olds! Emily got to add a message to Mrs. Cameron's memory book and give her a big hug. It was really fun to see the teenagers and young adults who were her former students! 5/19

Emily hurt her left pinkie finger badly enough on the playground that she called us to come get her. The school nurse said it wasn't broken, and wrapped the pinkie and ring fingers together, but Em was really upset and wanted to come home. We had quite a discussion after I wondered how she could feel bad enough to come home, but be so sure she would be okay later to come back for the Spring Carnival! In the end we compromised--Em came with me to go to Sarah's teacher conference at Fisher, then I took her back to school for the rest of the afternoon. 5/20

Today all four of us went to the UPark Spring Carnival! Emily liked playing some of the carnival games, got her face painted all over like a butterfly, and got a balloon animal in the shape of a dolphin. She also got to sit in a real NASCAR race car! She had to lay down all the way on her back on the seat in order to touch her feet to the pedals--she looked pretty silly. We also got to laugh at Mrs. Cameron being dunked in the dunk tank! 5/20

Daddy takes Em to the doctor's to check out her finger, which is still red and puffy this morning. Luckily, the doctor says it's just a couple of jammed knuckles, and with a few days wrapped up and some Motrin Em will be fine. So it's off to the Fisher Spring Fling! The girls make playdough sculptures, play some carnival games, paint little flower pots and make "wave bottles" with oil and water. THEN they go to Em's last soccer game! Em plays most of the game even with her fingers wrapped up and even scores a goal. After Mommy gets home, THEN we go for just a quick stop to Todd and Michelle's cookout party! Whew! Emily likes to look at their wedding pictures to see herself in her fancy flowergirl dress! 5/21

Emily's favorite song right now is "That's Where My Money Goes," which I remember from an old Mitch Miller album of my mom and dad's! I sang it off the top of my head once while I was brushing her teeth and now she asks me to sing it all the time. She especially likes the lines, "She wears silk underwear/I wear my last year's pair/Say, boys, that's where my money goes!" 5/05

Em walks with the 1st grade to the "Dinosaur Park" near school for their end of the year picnic. Neither Mom or Dad can go with, but Em is VERY grownup about it and tells us it's okay since we went to other things. Wow! Of course, this is the same girl who can pitch a 10 minute fit because Sarah got to choose the color of her ponytail holders first....5/26

Last day of 1st grade! Daddy picks Em up at noon only to find that they've pretty much done nothing but have a pizza party all morning! Em brings home a super report card and a paper grocery sack filled with her papers and workbooks from the year. When I get home she shows me where she wants to keep working in her math book! 5/27

The girls and I celebrate our official beginning of summer by heading to our favorite park with a bag full of snacks and sunscreen. We stay for 3 hours! We go for a little walk and discover that the children's fountain garden is on and the girls have a great time splashing around and getting soaking wet. A perfect start to the summer! (When we get home the girls do a little screen time, then, yes, Emily gets out her math workbook and asks me to do it with her!) 5/28

I pick up Emily early from school so we can go together to the Purple Coyote's Mother's Day party! We have lots of snacks, and I get a beautiful coffee filter flower from Sarah.5/6

Em once again has put her "eyeshadow" from Claire's party under her eyes instead of over. Sarah listens as I wipe it off and correct her: Eyeshadow goes on your eyelids! Later, Sarah has a question: "Where do people put their eye gloss?" 5/6

Sarah has a busy day with Daddy! First they go to Em's soccer game, then take her to Emily H's party. Then they come visit Mom at the library! 5/7

Sarah helps Daddy and Emily make a photo album for Mom for Mother's Day.Then we went for a drive up in the mountains, walked by a creek, and bought LOTS of books at a bookstore! A perfect day! 5/8

Sarah has an idea! "Hey! I can be a scientist AND a teacher! [When she grows up.] On my planning days, I can be a scientist!" She forgot that on planning days teachers don't have the day off, only the students! 5/10

Sarah watches Emily in her 1st grade play tonight! Sarah has paid such close attention to Em while she practices her songs that Sarah sings and does the hand motions while she's in Daddy's lap watching the show! 5/10

Sarah starts half of her sentences to us with, "Did you know...?" but her inflection isn't what I keep expecting. Instead of emphasizing you she emphasizes knowand with her wide open eyes and raised eyebrows I just have to smile every time! 5/05

At Em's soccer practice, Sarah runs up to me in tears: "Erin says I don't know everything, but I do!" When I related this to Stacie, Erin's mom, she laughed and said, "I don't know which part is funnier!" 5/12

After soccer today, Sarah and I go to the zoo for Carson's party! After hot dogs and cake, we get to ride on the carousel. Sarah chooses a Black Panther. 5/14

Sarah agrees to help our friend Sharilyn (she's one of the nursery attendants at church this year, and a student at DU) "do her college homework." Sharilyn is studying to be a school psychologist and needs to do a practice assessment. Sharilyn asks Sarah lots of questions to identify objects, has her draw different shapes, asks her to repeat long sentences back to her, and gives her sequences of instructions to follow. Sarah sails through with no problems. The only thing I heard her miss was when Sharilyn asked Sarah what a canoe was. Sarah decided it was an animal! But Sharilyn and her friend were very impressed when they asked Sarah to point to the person standing to the left of the boy in a picture. Sarah lifted her hands up and made "Ls" with her fingers and thumbs, looking for the hand that made a forwards "L." Then she knew which was her left and pointed to the correct person! Sharilyn isn't allowed to give us "results" because she is still a student, but it was pretty clear Sarah did just fine. 5/15

Sarah came with Emily and me to Mrs. Cameron's retirement party. She was Emily's kindergarten teacher and Sarah had been looking forward to having Mrs. Cameron for her teacher, too! Sarah gave Mrs. Cameron a hug and then was very happy to have a cookie from the refreshment table. 5/19

We had a wonderful teacher conference with Sarah's teachers, Miss Carrie and Miss Sarah. They said Sarah was so much fun to be around! Sarah spends a lot of her time at the Math and Science table, where she likes to make patterns and groups of manipulatives and build towers or constructions with building materials. She likes to draw and write, but gives most of her pictures away to her teachers and friends! She also loves the Sensory Table, which is a tub filled with different things to feel every week--like sand or dried rice. They said Sarah gets along with everybody, and so she chooses what to do based on what she wants to do rather than who is doing what. And she's perfectly fine working on her own as well. They like her imagination and her sunny personality! 5/20

Sarah had a good time at the UPark Spring Carnival. She wanted to get her face painted in a butterfly, too, and got a princess crown as her balloon shape. She especially liked the game where you tried to catch a plastic fish in a wading pool with a magnetic line. She was extremely patient until she hooked one. She also liked the floating rubber ducks--you had to try to match two shapes on their bottoms. Sarah remembered just which duck to pick up to make a match! 5/20

Sarah props her feet up on the coffee table. "Look how long my legs are! They're like a drawbridge for small people." 5/20

Sarah goes with Daddy and Emily to the doctor's to check out Em's finger, then when they get the okay, it's off to the Fisher Spring Fling! The girls make playdough sculptures, play some carnival games, paint little flower pots and make "wave bottles" with oil and water. THEN they go to Em's last soccer game! After Mommy gets home, THEN we go for just a quick stop to Todd and Michelle's cookout party! Whew! 5/21

The Purple Coyotes are learning about ants and they make a list together of the things they know. Some of the comments are like, "Mommy ants take care of their babies." Sarah's comment is, "Ants have 3 main body parts." 5/05
